Teaching
I used to think I was a pretty good teacher. After a while, I got to
thinking maybe I was only a not-unpopular teacher. Lately, I've come to
believe in the "It takes all kinds" theory of education. No one teacher
is all anyone needs. Some teachers are needed to work people
unmercifully on impossibly difficult tasks, others are needed to
backpedal and reinforce basics in an encouraging environment. Some are
needed as foils for anger and frustration; others for tickling the fancy;
others yet for afterparenting. I am still trying to learn what the most
effective methods are for me to use, given the sort I am.
In the spring of '96 I am teaching Physics 104 with Clint Sprott, a
really fine fellow with a totally different style from mine. We're
hoping to do a little experimenting. I am also continuing with the CCLE
program which provides a forum for learning about learning, and then a
place to discuss innovations that might work.
