From this Paradigm we determine the nature of our environment using the Scientific Method:
 

• A phenomenon is observed
• A hypothesis or model is developed to explain it
• The hypothesis is tested to determine whether it describes the phenomenon in all circumstances (not always possible)
• The hypothesis is checked for unexpected consequences (an important step)
• A group of related hypotheses that are proven true in a compelling manner (e.g. predict future events) becomes a Theory from which further hypotheses and models may be developed

Note:In common English usage, the word "theory" is used to indicate something that is not always true in reality: "In theory you can drive you car on the lakes in Wisconsin in mid-winter but I wouldn't do it."  A scientific theory is more like "a well constructed boat will float on water."
