Astronomy is a hierarchical discipline.

It deals with origin, present state, and evolution, but on three different levels.

The Cosmological Level: This deals with the origins, organization, and evolution of the Universe.
 
 
 

The Structural Astrophysics Level: Here we address the nature of stars, galaxies, and the interstellar medium.
 
 
 

The Star System Level: which concerns itself with the evolution of individual star systems including planets, comets, etc..

It is this local level that this course is all about.
