The Celestial Sphere:

This ancient concept actually describes the sky as seen by a person standing at any location.  In antiquity the sky was literally thought to be a sphere with the stars, Moon, Sun, and Planets embedded in it.


 
 

It is still convenient to use the sphere today.  If you think of all the objects in the sky at an equal distance from you, they would appear to be on sphere that rotates over your head on an axis that passes through the North pole.
