Tycho's
Observations:
-
Tried
to measure distance to Supernova of 1572 (Tycho) and comet of 1577 using
parallax
-
Seeing
no parallax he determined that these objects were very
far away
-
This
was in clear contradiction to the model of the Universe at the time:
-
Heavens
were perfect and unchanging
-
Supernovae
and comets were atmospheric phenomena
-
King
of Denmark financed Uraniborg (star castle)
-
Tried
to measure parallax to stars to prove/disprove Copernican heliocentric
model
-
Saw
no stellar parallax anywhere (would have needed a telescope). Concluded
either
-
Heliocentric
and stars are more than 5 x 1011
km away
-
OR
-
Geocentric
and stars are more than 4 x 107
km away
-
Believed
geocentric
-
Had
assistant named Johannes Kepler...
